چکیده

Sediment tracers are increasingly employed to estimate bed load transport and landscape evolution rates. Tracer trajectories are dominated by periods of immobility (“waiting times”) as they are buried and reexcavated in the stochastically evolving river bed. Here we model bed evolution as a random walk with mean-reverting tendency (Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process) originating from the restoring effect of erosion and deposition. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model contains two parameters, a and b, related to the particle feed rate and range of bed elevation fluctuations, respectively. Observations of bed evolution in flume experiments agree with model predictions; in particular, the model reproduces the asymptotic t−1 tail in the tracer waiting time exceedance probability distribution. This waiting time distribution is similar to that inferred for tracers in natural gravel streams and avalanching rice piles, indicating applicability of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck meanreverting model to many disordered transport systems with tracer burial and excavation.

Random Walk versus Breaking Trend in Stock Prices: Evidence from Emerging Markets

Abstract This paper investigates whether stock-price indices of seventeen emerging markets can be characterized as random walk (unit root) or mean reversion processes. We implement a test that can account for possible structural breaks in the underlying series and is considerably more powerful than standard tests for a random walk. We find that for fourteen countries, stock prices exhibit signi...

UCLA Anderson School of Management Working Paper Series Do Real Exchange Rates Follow a Random Walk?: Extracted Inflation-Based Evidence from Japanese Yen

Using the pure price inflation rates extracted and estimated by an innovative financialasset pricing method, we build and estimate univariate time series models of Japanese yen per U.S. dollar real exchange rates. Employing three methods of modeling, we find consistently that the extracted price index-based real exchange rate, rt, obeys a stationary, mean-reverting process. The mean-reverting b...

Discounting the Distant Future: How Much Do Uncertain Rates Increase Valuations?

Costs and benefits in the distant future—such as those associated with global warming, long-lived infrastructure, hazardous and radioactive waste, and biodiversity—often have little value today when measured with conventional discount rates. We demonstrate that when the future path of this conventional rate is uncertain and persistent (i.e., highly correlated over time), the distant future shou...

Asymmetric dynamics in REIT prices: Further evidence based on quantile regression analysis

a r t i c l e i n f o This study examines whether mean reversion in REIT prices presents an asymmetric behavior across various quantiles. Distinguished from previous literature that applied the traditional linear unit-root test, a state-of-the-art quantile unit-root test is employed to identify financial asset predictability in five real estate investment trust (REIT) classifications. Our empir...

A Study of Testing Mean Reversion in the Inflation Rate of Iran’s Provinces: New Evidence Using Quantile Unit Root Test

T his paper is to examine the mean reverting properties of inflation rates for Iran’s 25 provinces over the period from 1990:4 to 2017:7. To the end, we use various conventional univariate linear and non-linear unit root tests, as well as quantile unit root test by Koenker and Xiao (2004). Results of conventional unit root tests indicate that the null hypothesis of the unit root test...
